A career-spanning survey of a beloved master. Yoshitomo Nara — published with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art — accompanies the major retrospective devoted to one of the most cherished Japanese artists of his generation.
Spanning 35 years (1985 to 2020), the book presents the full range of Nara's work: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramic figures, an installation recreating his drawing studio, and never-before-exhibited idea sketches. His widely recognizable portraits of menacing figures reflect his raw encounters with inner self, drawing on childhood memories, his years in Germany (1988–2000), and his roots across Japan, Sakhalin, and Asia. The volume also features "liner notes" — the artist's writings on his personal collection of 1960s and 70s folk and rock albums, published in English for the first time.
The world seen through a singular eye.
