Wistful. Warm. A small moment of becoming.
A thousand pieces of a scene almost too tender to describe, rendered by Jean-Jacques Sempé for his New Yorker cover of February 5, 1996. A music shop full to the rafters — cellos leaning against walls, a saxophone gleaming at the center, sheet music tumbling from its stand — and, just inside the doorway, a small boy in a red jacket who has stopped moving. He's looking up at the saxophone, and the winter city behind him has quietly ceased to exist. Sempé spent five decades finding these moments — of aspiration, of wonder, of small hushed becomings — and rendering them in the loose, warmly humorous style that made him one of the most beloved illustrators the magazine has ever known.
Printed on premium thick stock with a linen-style finish that reduces glare and gives the artwork real depth, on a board crafted from recycled paper. Made in the USA. Finished size 19.25 x 26.625 in.
The moment before a life turns — one piece at a time.
