The city, in its most cinematic decades. I See a City: Todd Webb's New York by Sean Corcoran focuses on the work photographer Todd Webb produced in New York throughout the 1940s and 1950s — day and night, in all seasons, in every kind of weather.

Webb captured the metropolis from the Brooklyn Bridge to Harlem — its buildings, signage, vehicles, passing throngs, isolated figures, and curious eccentrics — producing images layered with light, shadow, and the friction of humanity. Trained under Ansel Adams in Detroit and later a navy photographer during World War II, Webb went on to build a distinguished postwar career. His work now lives in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art — this compact edition brings a forgotten American master back into the light.

The city, as one master saw it.
