Ewen Spencer: While You Were Sleeping 1998–2000

The late-90s subculture, exactly as it happened. While You Were Sleeping 1998–2000 gathers the photographs Ewen Spencer made for Sleazenation at the tail end of the century — candid, character-filled black-and-white and color images from the infamous "Savoir Vivre" listings pages at the rear of the magazine.

London was at the epicenter of a cultural boom, and Spencer criss-crossed it by minicab and night bus, capturing scenes across Northern Soul, Acid House, Jungle, Garage, Nu Metal, and South London blackout clubs. A graduate of the University of Brighton and later shortlisted at Rencontres d'Arles — where Martin Parr tipped him as "one to watch" — Spencer captures an era filled with love, lust, and messy authenticity.
